Texas Democrat Sleeps in Capitol to Protest Restrictions
State Representative Nicole Collier resisted newly imposed guidelines mandating that Democratic legislators be escorted by law enforcement officers, prompting her to remain in the Capitol building overnight.
This episode followed the return of Democratic lawmakers to Austin after a two-week departure.
The group had left Texas to prevent a quorum on a divisive redistricting initiative proposed by Republicans—an initiative aimed at reshaping congressional boundaries to potentially secure five additional Republican-leaning districts.
Once the Democrats re-entered the state, House Speaker Dustin Burrows enacted firm protocols restricting their movement.
Under these rules, Democratic members must secure written approval and agree to be accompanied by law enforcement in order to exit the House chamber until it reconvenes on Wednesday morning.
While the majority of Democrats abided by the new conditions and displayed their "permission slips" to members of the press, Collier stood her ground.
Her decision not to comply means she is now barred from leaving the Capitol premises without an escort and is only permitted to access her office under law enforcement supervision.
To highlight her demonstration, Collier posted on the U.S.-based social platform X, uploading a picture of herself lying on the floor surrounded by pillows and blankets. Alongside the photo, she wrote, "This was my night, bonnet and all."
